Dr Johansen obtained her medical degree from the Karolinska Institute (with 5 months of paediatrics at Vanderbilt university, Nashville, TN, USA), her specialty degrees in Pediatrics (2000) and Clinical Virology (2003) from the Karolinska University Hospital, and presented her PhD (1999) at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. During her PhD studies she was a visiting research student in Department of Paediatrics, King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan and Department of Immunology, Mt Sinai hospital, New York, NY, US. Her interest for research in rotavirus epidemiology, immunology and pathogenesis lead her to public health, initially at the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI) where she was responsible for the WHO National Measles and Rubella laboratory during the years 2000-2008 and contributed to seroepidemiological studies assessing measles, mumps, rubella and varicella antibodies in the Swedish and European populations as well as long-term antibody and B-cell memory following MMR vaccination. She also served as Scientific Secretary of the Swedish National Reference group for Vaccine Preventable Diseases (REFVAC) 2005-2008.Dr Johansen joined the EU Agency European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) located in Stockholm, Sweden in 2008. At ECDC she is currently serving as a vaccinology expert for the two Disease Programmes (1) Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses and (2) Vaccine-Preventable Diseases. She is project manager for external EU-wide projects assessing vaccine effectiveness, vaccine safety and the use of data linkage of electronic health care databases in monitoring of vaccines and vaccination programmes. Since 2008 she has served in the EMA Vaccine Working Party representing ECDC. Finally, since 2014 she is a Member of WHO SAGE on immunizations where she was elected vice Chair in 2016.
