Dr Sabrina Bacci is a medical doctor with a public health background who is currently working as Head of Vaccine Preventable Disease and Immunisation at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Stockholm, Sweden. She completed her M.D. degree from the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, followed by a Medical Specialization in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, also at the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. She also holds a Master Degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from London, United Kingdom. She has received advanced training in field epidemiology from the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET).

Before joining ECDC and between 2005 and 2011 she worked in public health and epidemiology at national level on vaccination and vaccine-preventable diseases at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita’, in Rome, Italy, and at the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen.  During these times, she worked among others, for the European Network for Vaccine Preventable Diseases (EUVAC.NET), and for the Vaccine European new Integrated Collaboration Effort (VENICE).

From 2011, she has been working at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in the field of vaccine preventable diseases. Her areas of interest in immunization are VPD surveillance, new vaccine introduction, and monitoring and evaluation, with diseases of interest pertussis and measles. She contributed to the set up, methodologies and first outputs from The European Surveillance System (TESSy) for vaccine preventable diseases.

More recently she guides technical input and coordinates activities at EU/EEA level for 14 vaccine preventable diseases for 29 EU/EEA Member States; these include the EU/EEA NITAG Collaboration, Scientific Advice, Surveillance, Microbiology, Response, Vaccine effectiveness studies. She interacted on a regular basis with stakeholders including European Commision, WHO, European Medicine Agency.
